The Medical Clinic
Sore throat? Stomach ache? Not sure? Every Wednesday morning the St. Vincent de Paul Medical Clinic opens up for business at 8:30. The homeless and working poor arrive to be seen by a doctor or physician’s assistant, and a registered nurse. The health care workers are volunteers and the visits and medications are completely free.
Patients come in for their ailments but what they receive is more than just an exam and medical advice. They get respect, attention, concern and tenderness. The medical clinic’s patients know the doctors and nurses don’t care what they’re wearing or where they slept last night. No one is there to judge them.
On the first Tuesday of every month, a pediatrician makes a home visit to St. Vincent de Paul’s B Street Apartments to check on all of the children in the New Beginnings program. It’s a wonderful opportunity to monitor the children’s health, growth and developmental milestones. Who knows? There might even be a lollipop in it for someone special!
...ill and you cared for me...”
